Ulcerative Colitis Flare – Seeing Progress

Ulcerative Colitis Flare – Seeing Progress

June 15, 2018 Ulcerative Colitis 0

Although this morning started like most, waking up in extraordinary pain and not really able to move, I’m finally starting to see some light! I hope the improvement continues.

Ulcerative Colitis Diet Adjustments

I’ve really been watching what I eat and drink over that past few days, concentrating on foods that are low-residue. I spent a few days eating soups, which I think helped a bit because the ingredients in the soup are fully cooked and easy to digest.

I’ve been drinking pretty much only Pedialyte and water. The Pedialyte works really well, especially for dehydration. When you have only loose stool, you really have to re-hydrate yourself if you want to stay out of the hospital. An electrolyte supplement is key for that. Gatorade is good, too, but there’s a lot of extra additives in it, most of which are not good on our stomachs during a flare.

Yesterday, I started with a diet similar to paleo. I’m want to stick closely to the paleo diet, but I’m mostly concerned with eating all-natural, single-ingredient food items. I’ll avoid dairy completely for now and stay away from hard nuts. I’ll look for more natural oils and natural healthy fats. Fats are key at this point because of the bacteria in them. Healthy, natural fats have so many pro- and pre-biotics that it’s insane that people shy away from fats. It’s all about eating it in moderation, every food group in moderation. I’m still not sure how I’m going to do extra carbs yet. I’m working on sticking to natural, raw greens but they scare the crap out of me because most of them are hard to digest right now. I’m looking into adding some whole fruits as well, fruits with the least amount of veins, so they’re easier to digest.

This Evening

It’s the evening and I’m happy to say I’ve had almost 3 full meals with snacks in between. That right there is a huge deal. I didn’t have near as much pain as the past few days and I’m hopeful it’s getting better. My problem is I get all excited like this, then blow it out of the water with some crazy celebration meal like cake or spicy food. Well not this time, this time I’m sticking to this and getting better. I have way too much riding on getting better. I just went today and reserved an RV for a 10+ day trip in July. We are moving at the end of July, and I have a vehicle that I have been running seriously ragged that I need to baby a bit.

My Meals for Today

Breakfast — Tilapia with mashed cauliflower.

Lunch — 2 chicken baked thigh pieces, 1/2 cup of raw spinach, 1/2 cup of cantaloupe with a few pieces of pineapple mixed in.

Dinner — Thin cut boneless chicken breast, 1/4 cup of green beans, 1 small baked potato.

My snacks were;

– Natural peanut butter – spooned randomly 🙂
– Canned peaches
– Walnuts
– Spinach mix salad with walnuts
– Shakeology chocolate peanut butter brownie

This seemed to work well with less pain. I’m hoping for a good night and maybe more than 4 hours of sleep since I’ve been waking up every hour lately.
