National Cannoli Day 2017

June 16, 2017, I set out to make sure I had one cannoli at some point throughout the day.  That quickly turned into the desire to find an actually GOOD cannoli.  Thus started “National Cannoli Day 2017 the hunt for an awesome cannoli”  I’m originally from New Jersey where you can find good cannoli at any street.  Where there is a bakery literally every shopping center and strip mall so there is no shortage of them.  Living in Virginia is a totally different story.   It’s so hard to find a good cannoli and I knew it so that’s how this turned into a good little adventure for me.

You can tell first off that none of it was freshly made, it was all packaged. What was good is that they filled them fresh for you so the cannoli wasn’t soggy. Since they looked like they came out of a box in the display case I opted for a chocolate covered one. The options they gave me was almonds or chocolate mini chips on the ends. Yes, chips are what I went with. The cheese was almost see through, not thick at all. It had a lighter flavor than I’d like you really couldn’t taste the cheese just more of a frosting sweet flavor. For .99c it was OK.

This one was noticeably better than Harris Teeter. I didn’t ask if they made their own shells or cheese but this cheese was much thicker. It also wasn’t overbearing with chocolate chips either. It had a good coat of chips on the ends and not to much cheese coming out so it wasn’t dripping. The downfall to this cannoli was the fact that it was pre-made and the shell wasn’t filled. When you fill the cookie of a cannoli you need to get the tip of the bag as far in as you can. Squeeze the cheese in until it starts to come out of the other side then start pulling it back. This did not happen so there was a big gap in the middle with no cheese. And since it was filled in the morning rather than at order the cookie started to get soggy. So the bottom was soft and the top was crunchy. The good parts are the cheese was thick and flavorful, there was just the right amount of chips. The cookie had a pretty good flavor.

By far this was the best so far.  You could easily tell that the cheese filling and the cannoli shell were better quality.  I did ask if they made them themselves but the waitress didn’t really seem to certain.  I’m assuming the company makes them not at each location.  They did put a little too much chocolate chips on the ends for my taste but it wasn’t overbearing like the other.  The flavor was really good, it was rich and not runny.

The cheese filling was also thick but not too thick.  They filled it to order so the shell was crunchy.  This was the first one with powdered sugar on it, that’s the way a cannoli is supposed to be.   This one really had my taste buds jumping.

Hands down the BEST.  I walked into the restaurant and this guy just walked up to me like he’s known me for years.  That tells a lot about a place and how you can be and feel comfortable.  Shook my hand and we talked about why I was there and what I wanted.  We also talked about a project he had worked on that day and had a pretty good conversation.  If nothing else this made the experience well worth it.  Back to the matter at hand the cannoli, or cannoli’s, he liked that I was dedicated enough to the cause of finding an awesome cannoli so much he gave me one for free.  These were clearly homemade, the cheese the shell and all.  They had imported cherry’s on one side and a sliver of mandarine orange on the other side.  With the powdered sugar to top it off.

After that stop, I started to head home and just picked a random Italian restaurant that looked like it would have some good food and atmosphere.  When I stopped they had a dessert display but sadly there were no cannoli so I started heading home.

Well before I went home I knew I could get one more in so I went to Anna’s in Poquoson.  Their website must not be working so here is the link to their menu

Anna’s wasn’t that great, I went in and asked if they made their own cannoli.  The answer I got was a raised eyebrow, a wrinkled lip and an “I think so”.  She put in an order for me and they quickly made it, brought it out to me and I left.  It was an ok experience, had I eaten there it may have been better.  I did not like the Hershey drizzle they put on it, that really turned it off for me.  Even if you don’t make your cannoli yourself you shouldn’t put just a generic chocolate syrup on it, that does not help the taste at all.  The cheese filling was ok, it was good and thick but not too thick.  At least you can tell they filled them fresh and the shell was crunchy.  They did put the powdered sugar on it so that was a plus.

When I got home a new story arose.  I had 3 kids I had to tell my adventure to and obviously they all wanted a cannoli, who was I to hinder them from enjoying the beauty of a cannoli on National Cannoli Day 2017 so we went out and got our free shakes from Tropical Smoothie (it was also flip flop day hehe).  While we were out we went to Farm Fresh and they got their own cannoli.

They absolutely loved them.  It was a real treat when I had gotten home they had already eaten dinner so this was their dessert which was perfectly fine by me.  I had my fill of cannoli for one day haha.  I did take a little taste so I could tell you about them, the cheese was a bit too thick and dried out but that is probably due to how long they were sitting there before we got them.  These were obviously filled well earlier in the day because the shells were not crunchy at all.  I’m sure they sat in that moist display case for the majority of the day so in those conditions, they would get soggy.  They tasted like a mediocre cannoli and had no powdered sugar so I was not impressed.  The kids liked it and they got to participate in the cannoli festivities so all is now right with the world.
